Thorpe ParkHow do you keep your children entertained over the bank holiday – seaside, adventure park, museum? With the weather forecast looking good, we know many of you will be jumping in your car or hiring one for the May Day break. So if you’re looking for inspiration on where to go for a family day out, here are some suggestions put together with help from my colleagues in the Avis office.

I’d recommend www.whattodowiththekids.co.uk or www.daysout.co.uk as a good source of ideas. They have loads of information about theme parks and museums and also some great discount vouchers. The information covers the whole country so you should be able to find something, wherever you live. The AA also has a great search facility that allows you to look up local events in your area.

If your children are a little older and you’d like something a bit more adventurous, you could always try Go Ape! (as long as you’ve got a head for heights!) or Go Ballistic if paintball sounds like your thing. Personally, I’m more of a theme park person and one of my favourites has always been Thorpe Park. However, someone in the office suggested Cadbury World, which sounds like a winner to me – a place that’s purely about chocolate. Surely something that would appeal to every child.

If you are renting a car with Avis, please don’t forget to book early. Much like Easter, bank holidays are busy periods and we’ve got some great deals available to help you get out and about. For information on traffic conditions, check out the Highways Agency website.

So where are you going this bank holiday? Your ideas could be an inspiration for others and help save some family arguments!

  1. Avis has changed their car groups in easier to understand car groups. Small, Medium and Large but the marketing dept. still seems to go with the old system as I noticed in the one car group upgrade promotion which lasts until 30 June.
I am now trying to find out which car group a VW Passat is.
The promotion says upgrade only applicable from group B through E with maximum upgrade to F.
Basically I am having a hard time finding out now which group the VW Passat is and if this car still fits within the upgrade promo

  2. A slap on the wrists for us for using the jargon. It seems we are yet to eliminate it from everywhere. I apologise for this and I will personally put £5 into our Macmillan Jargon tin and will get on the case to get this changed.

In answer to your question, it really depends what country you are renting in as our car categories and car mix can differ slightly by country. I will contact you directly to understand your individual rental needs.

On a side note, if anyone else catches us using jargon then please let us know. Sometimes things slip through the net and we’re quite happy for our customers to be our jargon police!

  3. Secrets to Traveling with Children

There are some wonderful secrets to traveling with children. They are wonderful because they help you to plan how to make the trip more uneventful and peaceful.

First and foremost remember that this vacation is for YOU! You plan it and decide where you are going.

There are considerations you’ll want to include, such as: do you want to sightsee or do the beach? Cruise or hike? Theme parks or camper park?

Secondly, and probably most importantly, know what to expect. Remember that the care-giving responsibilities you have when you are at home won’t magically disappear when you go on vacation. There will still be the standard “work” tasks of bathing, dressing, feeding, and running after children.

One thing to agree upon before leaving is the split of duties between traveling partners so that there aren’t surprises once you are gone.

When you consider a split of duties don’t forget to include the older children. Our 8-year-old loves helping with his younger sister and the truth be told, not only does he not mind helping, it makes him feel needed and “older”.
